On The Front Porch

I have always believed that the front porch is one of the most important parts of the home. It is a place to relax, to meet with friends, a place to watch the world go by. Front porches are where families bond, where relationships are bound together. It is a place where talking openly is encouraged and company is always welcome. I have found it refreshing that there are still many front porches used out here away from the busy world.

Ray Bradbury predicted a bleak world that was missing the crucial part of the home in his novel Fahrenheit 451. It made quite an impact on me at a young age how the culture he drew out was without family or the simpler things in life. The entire novel should be read as a warning to all people that there is such a thing as being too politically correct. But in all of the disturbing things in that particular book, the lack of the front porch and family time was a big deal to me. I hope society will always embrace this wonderful place of reflection.

'So cute a nest, I hope you would enjoy it!'

These little birdies belong to a pair of Flycatchers that decided on the most inconvenient spot for their nest. It is located just next to our back storm door. And every time we come in or out (which is very often) the parents try to attack and become very stressed out. We are trying to be gentle and not startle them, but it is difficult when the nest is right there. When we first arrived here, the two started fighting each other. We assume the husband was irritated that the wife had chosen such a spot! Their bickering was very amusing! Hopefully the fledgelings will start flying soon so we can move the abandoned nest to a better spot in hopes the parents will return to its new location next year.

  1. I love that book! I have the movie but haven't watched it yet.
Definitely on the list of must read books for the kiddos though!
"The mind only works when open" was a bumper sticker I saw the other day.
